“Good local reporting would inform people of how the city is being run, what policy changes are being made, and how people are affected.”
-Former Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild

Jonathan was one of many local leaders to participate in a series of strategy sessions on the declining state of local journalism.

An essential outcome of these discussions was the creation of a special initiative to be housed at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to fully assess the extent of the crisis and develop an action plan.

A task force of longtime Tucson residents comprised of journalists, business and civic leaders, and nonprofit experts, with the guidance of a national expert in journalism philanthropy, has been working for several months to collect and analyze data and develop strategies for rebuilding local journalism in the public interest.

The Local Journalism Initiative of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona is inviting the participants of these initial strategy sessions, along with other key stakeholders, to an “Insider Briefing” for an update on the current state of the local news and information landscape and how best to fix it.

Please join us on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in person or by Zoom, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, for this important discussion and essential step in ensuring that Southern Arizona communities are engaged and informed.

This will be a hybrid event with an in-person gathering at our Community Foundation Campus and the option to join us via Zoom.
