Christina Taylor Green, Daniel Hernandez, Jr., and Bill Badger Scholarship Fund

Phil and Carol Lyons of Tucson started this Scholarship Fund to honor Christina-Taylor Green, Daniel Hernandez Jr., and Bill Badger after the tragic events of January 8, 2011 in Tucson.

“Six people were killed, and Congresswoman Giffords and others were seriously injured. The symbol, in a way, of this senseless tragedy was a nine-year-old girl, with a budding interest in government, losing her life. That made the tragedy extra horrible,” said Phil Lyons.

“Daniel Hernandez Jr. who had just started interning with Congresswoman Giffords only five days prior, put his life at risk to shield her and showed a true spirit of courage and heroism that day.”

“Another true hero that day was Bill Badger who’s actions were credited with saving lives on that terrible day and we felt it appropriate to honor Bill as well who recently died of complications from pneumonia on March 11, 2015, ” said Phil.

The scholarship has been used to support students in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona to honor the join interest of Christina-Taylor and Daniel.  Since the fund was established 2-3 scholarships have been awarded each year.

The Lyons encourage contributions to this scholarship fund, which you can do by clicking the “donate” button to the left. They are providing a match for new contributions.  Their goal is to award $250,000 to students who represent the values of Christina-Taylor, Daniel Hernandez, Jr., and Bill Badger.
