Robert Alphaugh, Philanthropy Activist
Philanthropy Activist. Philanthropy: Latin and Greek: “Love of Mankind.” Activist: a person who advocates or practices doctrines that emphasize strong action; advocating and empowering a form of altruism that consists of private sector initiatives for the public good, focusing on quality-of-life endeavors. Philanthropy is often thought of as “fundraising.” But it is so much more. Philanthropy is a broad-gauged philosophy that includes any – and – all activities undertaken in the spirit of “doing the public good!”
As a leader in the cultural arena, Robert has worked in museums, opera, theater, dance and music, serving as CEO or consultant with such organizations as the Minnesota Historical Society, The Foundation for Barnes – Jewish Hospital, The Screen Actors Guild Foundation, The Guthrie Theatre, Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Joffrey Ballet, Williamstown Theater Festival, Arizona Theatre Company and Tony Award-winning Victory Gardens Theater.
Robert frequently presents on nonprofit management, philanthropy, and board development and governance. He particularly enjoys presenting/discussing the GIVING USA data on fundraising performance across the country. In many ways, the ROGARE report is similar. National practices and trends are explored, and in this session broken down as they relate to our own community.
He has served on the faculties of Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Emory University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Columbia College and the School of the Art Institute – Chicago. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina.
