All are welcome, including those who are interested in serving on a board but have not had an opportunity to serve in that role previously.

Who Does What? Clarifying Roles Between Staff and the Board

Still Confused About the Difference Between Roles and Responsibilities of a Non-profit Board vs the Roles and Responsibilities of Non-profit Staff Leadership? What’s the Answer? The Answer is – It Depends. What Stage of Your Non-profit Lifecycle is Your Organization in? Let’s Go From There.

This session will look at the bright lines between board responsibilities and staff responsibilities, and how they change and grow as the organization matures. The purpose of the session is to share with board members and staff members the common practices when it comes to roles: when are they different, when are they shared, and how they can change. Attendees will a) more deeply understand what is best for their organization(s), b) learn what makes a great board/staff relationship.

Attendees are encouraged to bring case studies that can be discussed. Handouts and slides will be shared. Target audience – all levels of experience are encouraged to attend. Material will be geared to boards who are beyond the start-up phase, and the discussion will assume that the organization has a least one staff member or is planning to hire one. Also to be considered is the current environment in which many non-profits find themselves today.

The session is led by Claire West, Principal at Claire West-Consulting, who has consulted with non-profits of all sizes for over two decades throughout the state and out-of-state. Claire specializes in board development, strategic planning, and fundraising. Her happy place is working with boards to help them be all they want to be.
