Each summer, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) partners with the Southern Arizona Estate Planning Council (SAEPC) to host a special learning series for Professional Advisors. This includes attorneys, accountants, trust and investment advisors, insurance brokers, and financial planners who want to deepen their knowledge and stay current on issues that matter to their clients. It’s a chance to connect with peers, expand your expertise, and gain practical strategies to help clients in meaningful ways.
Session I focuses on working with formula clauses in trusts and will be led by an attorney, a CPA, and an investment advisor. This session highlights:
- Modern estate planning and drafting using formula clauses.
- Funding of trusts created under formula clauses, including discussing the various funding mechanisms and considering administrative factors.
- Options for dealing with unnecessary credit shelter trusts.
- Investment advisor’s perspective, planning, and maintenance of trusts created under formula clauses.

About the Speakers

Craig is a Tucson native who has practiced law for 25 years in Arizona in the areas of estate planning, estate and gift taxation, probate, and trust administration. Craig is a Certified Specialist in Estate & Trust Law by the State Bar of Arizona and a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation.
Craig is a past chair of the State Bar Probate & Trust Section and the Estate and Trust Advisory Committee for specialization. He’s a former President of the Arizona Fiduciaries Association and the Southern Arizona Estate Planning Council. He was long ago an erstwhile writer, as evidenced by his award-winning humorous combination of law and swords-and-sorcery published in the State Bar’s magazine, and he regularly appeared on KVOA’s News at 4 as the station’s legal contributor.
Craig earned his J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1995. His wife, Patti, is also an attorney, and his pretty-much-grown sons no longer keep him quite as busy, but his dogs Stella and Luna still need him. Craig’s passion for heavy metal music remains very much intact, and his CD collection continues to grow.

Evelyn primarily focuses on federal income taxation of trusts, estates, partnerships, limited liability companies, and individuals, emphasizing planning for complex fiduciary and real estate transactions.
Evelyn holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in accounting, both earned at the University of Arizona. She has been published in Taxation for Accountants and Taxation for Lawyers. She has instructed graduate tax courses at the University of Arizona, the Arizona State Society of CPAs, and various professional groups. Her professional affiliations include the Southern Arizona Estate Planning Council, the Tucson Tax Study Group, the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Evelyn has volunteered with the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, Echoing Hope Ranch, Animals’ Crusaders of Arizona, the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, and the American Cancer Society. She is currently serving on the professional advisory committee for the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona and the finance committee for the Primavera Foundation.

Born on Black Monday, one of the most historic days in the stock market, Ryan Halvorson likes to say he was born into the industry. From a young age, there was never a doubt about the path ahead. Becoming a financial advisor wasn’t just a goal but a calling.
Now with more than a decade of experience in wealth management, Ryan brings that same focus and passion to his role at TCI Wealth Advisors. He offers personalized guidance to help individuals make well-informed decisions about their financial futures. Before joining TCI, Ryan held roles at Merrill Lynch, US Trust, US Bank Private Wealth Management, and Morgan Stanley.
What Ryan values most is the connection he builds with each client. These aren’t transactional relationships. They are long-term partnerships grounded in trust, care, and a clear understanding of what matters most to each person. His commitment is to be a steady, reliable presence for the next 20 to 30 years, helping clients confidently navigate life’s financial landscape.
