Nonprofit Provides Real-World Training for the Blind

Nonprofit Provides Real-World Training for the Blind

In October, our collaboration with Pat Parris and KGUN9’s The Giving Project continues, putting a spotlight on the efforts of Saavi Services for the Blind. Originally founded by two blind sisters in 1964, Saavi first began as a social club for visually impaired individuals and has since grown into a statewide agency serving thousands of blind children, adults, and seniors throughout the state of Arizona.

“We were actually founded by two blind sisters,” said Saavi president Amy Porterfield. “They developed a place where people could come together.” 61 years later, Saavi Services for the Blind has grown into one of the nation’s premier nonprofits serving blind children, adults, and older adults.

“Over the years, we’ve added lots of different training opportunities,” Porterfield said. “Now, we are primarily a training center, and we have a center here in Tucson and one in Phoenix. We serve people all over the country.”
