On the eve of the Santa Cruz Community Foundation Civic Leadership Award Dinner, to be held on Sept. 18th at Tubac Golf Resort & Spa, we caught up with Dr. Eladio Pereira and asked him about his life and career, before his acceptance of the Roberta Bracker Memorial Civic Leadership Award.
Q: You’ve had a storied career in medicine, Dr. Pereira. In your own words, can you give us an outline of your journey?
A: I completed medical school and residency in Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. I joined Mariposa Community Health Center in 1986, a small community health center starting to initiate the medical care of adults. My work has emphasized teaching, mentoring, and supporting new programs to keep health care local.
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of our more significant challenges in our history. Working with a great team, we reduced the morbidity and mortality of this illness. Thanks to my wife Yolanda who has supported me for many years.
Q: What does receiving the Roberta Bracker Memorial Civic Leadership Award mean to you?
A: I accept the recognition with Humility. I knew Mrs. Bracker and what she stood for, resiliency, justice and access to health care. That is what we do at Mariposa. I work with a fantastic team that embraces the cultural beliefs of compassion, connection, impact and wellness. I am honored to receive this award on behalf of all healthcare workers in out county.
Q: Thank you so much for your time, and congratulations on the award, Dr. Pereira!
