Over the weekend, I sat with a friend at a pub. The conversation drifted inexorably to the chaos of the moment. She wanted to take action, had taken action, but wasn’t sure what would help. That old feeling of helplessness.

As someone who works deeply in the community, I had an answer (not THE answer) for her. But first, I had questions: What do you care about? What are you already involved in? Turns out she is already a volunteer and advocate around end-of-life issues. She has a group, she knows her stuff, she knows healthcare is likely in for some sudden shocks, and her brain started turning immediately towards action.

We have real power in Southern Arizona, even if we feel disconnected from the broader national decisions. The key is finding how to channel that power through the causes and groups we’re already a part of. Take a moment to think about it, whether alone, with a friend, or as a family. List the group chats, causes, social clubs, and teams you’re involved with. What could you do together to make an impact?

Local knowledge is also real power.

I also encourage you to support local news outlets. If LGBTQ+ issues matter to you, consider subscribing to and supporting The Lookout. For timely Tucson’s City Council coverage, check out reporter Yana Kunichoff in Arizona Luminaria and consider becoming a paid member. If climate change is your concern, Pima County wants to hear from you.

The bottom line is, we have real power. Let’s use it.
