The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona is proud to partner with KGUN 9 and Pat Parris to launch The Giving Project – Doing Well, By Doing Good. Each month, Pat will present a new nonprofit organization that is making a positive impact in our community and asks you to consider making a donation.

In addition, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona is matching the first $500 in donations each month. If you cannot give, you can still support our nonprofit community by sharing information about the project.

Our recipient for October is Beads of Courage. Since 2003, Beads of Courage has pursued a mission to provide innovative arts-in-medicine programs that improve the quality of life for children coping with serious illness.

Through the flagship Beads of Courage program, children receive a colorful bead for every medical intervention they endure and every milestone they achieve. A child’s bead collection helps them see and feel how far they have come and how strong they have been. Research shows that the program decreases illness-related distress and increases the use of positive coping strategies. Children coping with serious illness experience many emotions, including fear, loneliness, anxiety and depression. The Beads of Courage program also increases the use of positive coping strategies, helps children find meaning in illness, and restores a sense of self. Beads given at the bedside are spirit-lifting, which can be lifesaving in the moment.
