Nonprofits help our desert bloom. Let’s protect them.
There has been a lot of news coverage this past week on the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” The Bill continues to be the focus in Washington, with much remaining uncertain. As of this writing, it will likely be pushed forward next week.
What we do know is that this Bill is packed with legislation. And while much of the attention has gone to the big-ticket items, some lesser-known parts of the Bill could seriously affect our nonprofit sector. Proposed higher taxes on private foundation investment earnings will take money away from nonprofits that benefit from private foundation grants and send it to the government. New powers for the Treasury Secretary will allow him to revoke tax-exempt status without due process. You can learn more about these impacts from our friends at the National Council of Nonprofits.
Nonprofits are America’s invisible backbone. Nowhere is this more true than in Southern Arizona, where we have a vibrant nonprofit community. Nonprofits provide critical support to improve communities and save lives. Nonprofits support large and small communities, often in unrecognized ways. They’re part of the desert’s living fabric, tough and generous, always finding a way to endure.
These components of the Bill will put more pressure on already-stretched nonprofits in our community who provide critical services. We know firsthand how important philanthropy is, particularly with federal support continuing to shrink, local philanthropy matters more than ever.
But there’s hope. Just like wildflowers after the rain, our community shows up when it’s needed. When we come together, we can create something stronger and more beautiful than we could on our own.
We’re stronger when we BLOOM together.
