CFSA Announces Additional $10,000 in COVID-19 Support

In partnership with our generous donors and supporters, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has granted $3.67 million in COVID-19 Response Grants since March 2020.

We are pleased to announce that an additional $10,000 in COVID-19 relief funding was awarded in August to Border Community Alliance to provide essential services and COVID-19 protection to migrant populations at their San Juan Bosco Migrant Shelter.

Gilda Loureiro, funder of the San Juan Bosco Migrant Shelter, shared, “Without this CFSA grant, the shelter would not be able to provide assistance to the migrant population. The number of children and women are higher this year than in the 39 years of operation. Many of the migrants that test positive for COVID-19 come back to the shelter to recover once they test negative, and wait an average of three months until their migratory status is resolved.”

Funds will be utilized for migrants’ essential needs such as heating, food, medicine, cleaning materials, supplies, and a weekly stipend for a volunteer to help register migrants as they enter the shelter. The challenging conditions at the shelter have been exacerbated by increases in COVID-19 cases and extreme flash floods throughout Southern Arizona.
