Moving Toward a More Perfect Non-Profit Business Model

All non-profit businesses need to invest in their infrastructure: human talent, facilities, technical support and other materials. It is no longer – and actually never was – OK to conduct business on the backs of employees.  Major funders are beginning to understand this fact. The Pew Charitable Trust adds 20% to all awards for overhead. They know non-profits can’t deliver on their missions without electricity and pencils.  We, in Southern Arizona, need to be making the case that gifts and grants include a percentage for overhead. And more importantly, more funders need to be educated that general operating, unrestricted donations are best. If a non-profit has made the cut for a gift, then why doesn’t the funder trust the organization to put their contribution to best use?

Chief Development Officers, Major Gift Officers need to learn how to make the case for general operating or unrestricted donations, and they need the support of their EDs, CEOs, CFOs and Board members.
