Phil and Carol Lyons of Tucson started this fund to honor Christina-Taylor Green and Daniel Hernandez, Jr. after the tragic events of January 8, 2011 in Tucson.
“Six people were killed, and Congresswoman Giffords and others were seriously injured. The symbol, in a way, of this senseless tragedy was a nine-year-old girl, with a budding interest in government, losing her life. That made the tragedy extra horrible,” said Phil Lyons.
“But the heroism of a young man who had just started interning with Congresswoman Giffords only five days prior, putting his life at risk to shield her, is why we chose to honor them both.”
The scholarship fund supports students in the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona to honor the joint interests of Christina-Taylor and Daniel. The first scholarship recipients were awarded in Spring 2012.
The Lyons encourage contributions to this scholarship fund, which you can do by clicking the “donate” button to the left. They are providing a match for new contributions. Their goal is to award $250,000 to students who represent the values of Christina-Taylor and Daniel Hernandez, Jr.
