(Tucson, Ariz.—April 1, 2012) — Igor Gorin Memorial Awards went to first place winner Ryan Belongie ($10,000) and second place winner Yunnie Park ($7,500) in the 2012 award competition administered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.
For many gifted vocalists poised to begin successful careers, the few years between their degree programs and being hired by major opera companies are particularly difficult. Flying from city to city to audition, and hiring accompanists and coaches can be costly.
Since 1993, the Igor Gorin Memorial Fund has awarded $235,800 to 64 young performers to help them become successful during this critical period. The fund was established in 1987 at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona by the late Mary Gorin, in honor of her late husband Igor Gorin, who was a world-renowned artist whose career began in the late 1930s and spanned decades.
“It is an extraordinary feeling to know that Igor’s passion for opera lives on in other talented young adults,” said D.J. Fillman, the Gorin Fund advisor and a friend of the Gorin family.
